From the Collection of.... Indy Racer Rick Mears

I have to admit I generally do not follow racing, car racing... horses are another story. But, the Indianapolis 500 race never fails to bring back memories of one of my first major artwork sales in the early 1980's. At the time I was creating large hand painted photographs (oil on black and white silver prints) of Florida themed scenes. I have definitely painted my fare share of palm trees. To change things up, I decided to create some "pool" themed images. These images were stage and photographed at my parent's pool.

The pool images were 40 x 30 inches printed on my favorite paper at the time, Kodak Ektalure G.

Once completed and framed they went off to my gallery at the time. About three weeks later I was notified that a designer bought the images for a collector in Jupiter, Florida who had just built a new home. That collector.... four time Indy winner, Rick Mears.

I would like to say I knew who Mears was at the time but I didn't really, I was just excited to know I sold artwork. Thankfully, Matt filled me in on the all time great racer. Here is a little Rick Mears history for those unfamiliar with his achievements - courtesy of Wikipedia.

"Mears is is a retired American race car driver. He is one of

four men to win the Indianapolis 500 four times (1979, 1984, 1988, 1991) and is the current record-holder for pole positions in the race with six (1979, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991). Mears is also a three-time Indycar series/World Series champion (1979, 1981 and 1982). As of 2016, Rick Mears continues to work as a consultant and spotter for and Penske Racing, the team with which he won all of his Indycar races."
